Data Recovery Help

Immediate Data Recovery Help

Kroll Ontrack offers a free Data Recovery phone consult to:

  1. Confirm your hardware, configuration, virtualisation software and backup procedure.
  2. Assess the data loss situation and possible failure points.
  3. Provide tips to prevent further data loss.
  4. Assess the possibility of a Remote Data Recovery.
  5. Advise on preparations for an In Lab Data Recovery.

Storage System Failures

Storage system failures can be caused by one or a combination of events:

  • Overwritten storage configuration
  • Power surge
  • Failed RAID rebuild
  • Failed hard disk drive(s)
  • Deleted snapshots
  • Meta-data corruption
  • Snapshot management errors
  • Data management errors
Data failure

Mechanical Damage To Hard Drives

If a drive is making unusual mechanical noises, turn it off immediately and get assistance.

Leaving a mechanically failing drive powered on increases the likelihood of further damage, significantly reducing the chances of a full recovery.

SAN, DAS, NAS Data Loss And Recovery Tips

Attempting to recover a NAS, SAN, DAS device without an experienced data recovery specialist can put your critical data at further risk. When hardware malfunction is a component of the problem, permanent destruction of data can occur with failed recovery attempts. Furthermore, the actions taken immediately after a storage system failure can have significant effects on the ability to achieve a full recovery of the data involved.

Data Recovery Power Down

Prevent SAN, DAS Or NAS Data Loss

A controlled powering down of the storage unit is really the safest approach to prevent backup and maintenance features from making changes to the affected system. This will prevent automated backups or similar automated processes.

NAS Data Loss and Recovery Tips

  • Never replace a failed drive with a drive that was part of a previously used system; always zero out the replacement drive before using.
  • If a drive is making unusual mechanical noises, turn it off immediately and get assistance. Leaving a mechanically failing drive powered on increases the likelihood of further damage, significantly reducing the chances of a full recovery.
  • Have a valid backup before making hardware or software changes.
  • Label the drives with their position in a RAID array before removing them from your system.
  • If a system fails in the middle of a rebuild process, do not run further rebuild attempts.
    • Do not run volume repair utilities (such as CHKDSK or FSCK) or defragmenter utilities on suspected bad drives, or a system with suspect drives involved even if you are prompted to do so. Some NAS systems automatically run potentially destructive processes (such as additional rebuild attempts) without the user being aware.
    • Disconnect and power down the storage unit and contact a data recovery provider.
  • In a power loss situation with a RAID array, if the file system looks suspicious, or is un-mountable, or the data is inaccessible after power is restored, do not run volume repair utilities. Contact a data recovery provider.
  • Write down the sequence of events that led up to the data loss and write down any repair attempts. This is valuable information to help you to recover your data. Volume repair utilities such as CHKDSK are designed to force file systems into a consistent state. While this can be useful on single drive systems with light corruption, in most cases, inconsistencies in a volume stored on RAID storage are a result of problems at the RAID level (i.e. out-of-sync drives, bad rebuilds etcetera). Running CHKDSK in these scenarios can make damaging irreversible changes to the file system structures.
